Loads and Aero-elasticity Engineer - Southampton UK

Blade Dynamics is looking to expand its team at the Southampton Head Office in the UK with a loads and aero-elasticity engineer who is keen on working on innovative wind turbine blade technology.

Main tasks will be to perform loads and aero-elastic analysis, develop new models and tools to improve design capabilities and to work together with team members on the development of new concepts and technologies in the field of wind turbine rotors. As the technical team is small and projects are diverse, a flexible individual who is creative and eager to learn will benefit from a rewarding and satisfying environment of an innovative engineering team.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • M Eng, MSc or PhD in relevant field of engineering or physics
  • Knowledge of wind turbine loads analysis and aero-elasticity or relevant experience in the area (industry / PhD)
  • Experience in load calculation and aero-elastic analysis for wind turbines (with e.g. Bladed, Haw2c or Focus)
  • Familiar with the fundamentals of aerodynamics
  • Knowledge of (wind turbine) control technology
  • Good understanding of structures and structural analysis
  • Analytic, structured and creative approach to work
  • Programming experience, e.g. Python, Matlab, C++
  • (Proven) good reporting and strong communication skills

Engineering Manager - Southampton UK

Amazing opportunity to join an innovative high tech design and manufacturing company operating in the Wind Energy market. Blade Dynamics is a young innovative company which designs, develops and build blades using unique seamless modular technology, which significantly reduce the cost of energy from wind. We have facilities at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana, and in the South of England.

We are looking for an outstanding professional to join our special technical team. Our team is highly experienced, with an extensive knowledge of material science, composite engineering, blade technology, manufacturing processes and the wind energy market.

This role reports to the CTO and its main purpose is to provide the technical engineer excellence and integrity, ensuring that Processes, Procedures and Practices are described and adhered to; with an emphasis on Quality and HSE within the technology community. The potential candidate will have the ability to lead the technical team on engineering processes and have the ability and potential to deputise for the CTO.

Main responsibilities involve amongst other things:

  • To define and upkeep a suite of Processes, Procedures and Practices for BD scaled appropriately to the business needs and customers’ requirements.
  • To provide a Work Load Forecasting system within technical engineering based around existing programmes of work (projects) and Bids activities; providing regular reports.
  • To ensure that technical and engineering developments are conducted in a professional manner, meeting internal and external Processes, Procedures and Practices; and consistent with ISO audit requirements and HSE functions ensuring technology developments are compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • To ensure Design Reviews are formally conducted in accordance with a defined design process map, and recorded following the Technical Development Process.
  • To manage a Design Record system providing a repository for all historical technology activities and on going / future activity; including an Archive of Patents etc.
  • To ensure engineering technology is Business Continuity Proofed.
  • To support the CTO in the development of concepts through the design process to manufacture.
  • To address the Design for Produce-ability process, minimising lost time between detail design and release to manufacture.
  • To support Operations with the timely expediting of Works Query Notes, Stop Actions, Drawing Amendments, Work Area Meetings etc. which otherwise may impede manufacture proceeding.

Experience:

  • At lest 15 years experience in a technical area within a company with focus on Engineering Design, Prototyping and Manufacturing and have worked in an engineering and design environment.
  • Proven track record in a leading role in the design, implementation and administration of “gate control” processes and the management of project output and documentation (drawing control, technical notes, calculations, design tools change control).

Education:

  • Qualified Chartered Engineer with a university degree in Engineering (mechanical, technical or material engineering). Quality Engineering and composite, material science would be an advantage.

We are looking for someone who is a strong influencer, practical and capable to manage pressure, tight deadlines and changing goal posts. Candidates should be able to work comfortable in a detailed level, while at the same time, understanding the pace of business urgency and have the big picture.


This position involves travelling and requires someone fluent in spoken and written English; other European languages would be an advantage.
